Money Saving Hacks for the Holidays
Does the thought of the holiday season have you seeing dollar signs? If so, it is time to hack your way through and save some cash. Here are some easy and fun money saving hacks for the holidays, perfect for helping you survive Christmas with a little extra cash in our pocket. Here are 10 creative money saving hacks to get you started.
1. Wait to buy your live tree.
Not only will it last until Christmas this way, but chances are you can snag a better price. Tree prices will go down the closer to Christmas it gets, so wait about 10 days to a week before if possible. Choose a variety that is more common and costs less, such as a Douglas. A Blue Spruce is a fancier variety and may cost more. If you don’t know which is which, just ask!
2. Head to your local thrift store for gift packaging.
Your local thrift store will have gift boxes, bags, even wrapping paper and bows from holidays gone by. Scope out your local thrift store for great prices on these items so you can get your gifts wrapped for less. The Dollar Tree or even the Dollar Spot at Target are other great ideas!
3. Make your own gift tags.
You can make gift tags out of just about anything. Try making them from paper bags, old greeting cards, and even wrapping paper scraps. Then just tape the tag on or punch a hole and add some ribbon for a quick hang tag.
4. Find free music.
Don’t spend big bucks on holiday CDs and downloads. Instead, enjoy one of the many FREE holiday music channels on Pandora. Download the Pandora app for free and you will have all of the holiday music you want at your fingertips.
5. Make all parties and gatherings potluck.
The holidays can be a stressful time to start planning parties. Should you find yourself needing to plan, make sure to make the gathering potluck style. This way you aren’t assuming all food costs or having to spend all of your time in the kitchen.
6. Stock up on inexpensive hostess gifts.
Keep some inexpensive wine, candles, and lotion on hand as well as some quick bows or ribbons for hostess gifts. Should you find yourself going to any parties, it is nice to take a hostess gift with you. These gifts will also come in handy should unexpected guests (with gifts!) drop by. This way you won’t be empty handed.
7. Send postcards instead of greeting cards.
Not only are they quicker and easier to send, but they cost less too. You can find all sorts of designs and even include family photos on your cards, and a postcard stamp will cost you less than a traditional stamp.
8. Keep your eyes peeled for free holiday shows.
Many churches and schools put on free shows during the holiday season. Check your local paper or news stations for information on free concerts, plays, and light displays that may be available in your area. You might be surprised at how much you can find and take advantage of.
9. Watch for free holiday community events.
Keep your eyes peeled for free Santa sightings, craft events for kids, holiday story times, town wide caroling, and other holiday events. Many cities go out of their way during the holiday season to put on such events, so now is the time to take advantage of them.
10. Always price match.
When doing your holiday shopping, it is always wise to price match. The holidays are a time to wheel and deal, and price matching is a great way to do this. When buying an item that you can find a better advertised price for, let the store know. They may not only match it but give you an additional discount as well.
