Big Changes are coming to Walgreens! They just issued a NEW Walgreens Coupon Policy for 2014! You can view the Walgreens Coupon Policy Here, but I also have a list of Important Updates that you don’t want to miss!
New Walgreens Coupon Policy Changes 2014
You cannot use coupons that Exceed the Selling Price of an Item
Walgreens will no longer adjust a coupon down if it exceeds the selling price of an item. You will need to use a coupon lower than the selling price of the item. This is a huge change because most stores will either adjust a coupon down or apply the overage to other items. This is probably one of the most important changes I see.
Coupons Must Scan
They added a section that says Coupons that appear distorted, blurry, or altered in any way shall not be accepted; all coupons must have a clear and scannable bar code. That implies that if your coupon doesn’t scan they may refuse it. I’m guessing most store managers will instruct cashiers not to enter coupons manually, but that could vary based on your store. (General Guidelines Item #7)
You cannot use a coupon on a Free Item
If you have a B1G1 Free Sale, or a Buy 2 Get 1 Free Sale you can only use a coupon on the items you are buying. You cannot use a coupon on the free item. (General Guidelines Item #9)
Coupons may not be applied against any free item received in any offer – I’m guessing this means they won’t take a B1G1 Free Coupon on a B1G1 Free Sale because you would be applying a coupon to a free item. But again this is a little unclear in my opinion from the policy different stores may interpret it differently.
I also think this will affect using a $1/2 Coupon on a B1G1 Free Sale. You would have to buy 4 items to use a $1/2 Coupon.
You cannot Stack a B1G1 Free Sale & Coupon
The new B1G1 Free Guidelines state that at least one product needs to be purchased. A maximum of one b1g1 coupon is permitted per 2 qualifying items.
Here’s how I read this: You need to purchase one product. You can use 1 B1G1 Free Coupon on 2 of the items you are buying. So you would need to buy 4 items and pay for one.
Buy 4 Items
Get 2 free from B1G1 Free Sale
Use a B1G1 Free Coupon and get another item free
Pay for 1 Item and get 3 free!
Not near as great as 4 items for Free, but it’s still a really great deal!
No Free Product Printable Coupons
Walgreens will not accept free product printable coupons. This is a new change for Walgreens, but it’s a standard change for most retailers now so I expected this at some point. Hopefully manufacturers will stop issuing these online and put more of these types of coupons in the inserts.
You cannot stack Total Store Offer Coupons
If you have an Employee Discount or a Senior Discount, you cannot stack that with another total store offer coupon like a 20% Friends and Family Discount. This doesn’t affect everyone but it will affect those who are employees, military and seniors who have been stacking their discounts with these total purchase coupons.
Here’s the Good News:
OK, so I know that’s a lot of bad news! Make sure you read the Full Coupon Policy Here for all the details but I think I covered most of the major changes. Now, let’s talk about a few good things and end this post on a positive note!
Walgreens is NOT getting rid of Register Rewards :) There was a lot of talk about a year ago when the balance rewards program came out that these would be going away and I don’t see any indication of Register Rewards going away in the new update, in fact they are stating more about how they work which I think means they plan to keep them around a while.
Walgreens will still have Great Deals & Free Items! A lot of times Free Deals come from Points Offers or Register Rewards, so I don’t think this means the end of shopping at Walgreens. The few changes to B1G1 Free Deals will affect some deals, but it has been really rare to have a B1G1 Free Sale and a B1G1 Free Coupon over the last year so I don’t think that affects as many deals as it might seem like. Most of Walgreen’s Sales on Razors these days are B1G1 50% off and those sales won’t be affected.
Price Matching still exists! Not being able to use a coupon over the price of the item is just silly in my opinion :) But let’s look on the bright side, Walgreens prices are really high and if it’s a sale item then typically you can price match that at Walmart where you can still get overage :)
You can Still Stack Coupons! Walgreens didn’t take away our ability to stack store and manufacturer coupons. You can also still apply Multiple Walgreens Coupons (All applicable Walgreens Store Coupons) To your purchases. And you can stack the 20% off Friends and Family Discounts with other offers, etc. In my opinion they did make a few changes that will make things more complicated but they are falling in line with most of the changes we have seen at other stores recently and I think we will still be able to get great deals at Walgreens! We’ll just have to get creative! I’ll still be shopping at Walgreens and posting great deals for you guys so make sure you check out the Walgreens Store Pages freqently!
