Do you struggle after school finding activities to do with your kids that aren’t sedentary? How about giving them a nourishing after school snack? I hope I can give you a few new ideas today to help you out!
After School Activities and Snacks to help your Kids stay Healthy and Active
After School Snack Ideas
1. Wheat toast with peanut butter and banana slices (one of my personal favorites!)
2. Celery filled with peanut butter
3. Apple slices dipped in peanut butter or almond butter
5. Cheese Sticks
6. Fisher Nut Exactly Snack Bites (roasted nuts and whole grain popcorn dipped in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, peanut butter or salted caramel) Sweet and Salty!
They have 15 to 16 calories per snack bite and no artificial flavors. These are also easily thrown in the car with the stand up bag that’s re-sealable.
My son won’t be the only one eating the Fisher Nut Exactly Snack Bites, sometimes Mom snacks on these too!
7. Fruit Smoothie
Our go to is strawberry banana for the kids with fresh or frozen fruit!
You can buy a plastic bin at the dollar store and fill it with snacks you approve for your kids to have after school. You can have one in the pantry for shelf stable snacks and one in the refrigerator for those that aren’t shelf stable.
After School Activity Ideas
1. Bike or Walk after school
If you live close enough to your child’s school let them ride their bike or walk home. You can get some exercise in at this time also.
Even on a cold day if you have a large enough space you can let your kids ride bikes in the garage. If it’s nice, go outside and let them ride their bikes or you ride with them if they’re old enough. Walking is another great activity if you have smaller kids and aren’t able to keep up with them while biking.
My daughter has even started to ask to go for a run, I had no idea she could do it, but she surprised me. Let your kids take the lead sometimes and be willing to exercise with them.
2. Play a Game that includes Exercise
Get a deck of cards. Take out the face cards (J,Q,K). Each suit represents an exercise. You can make up your own, but these are a few ideas to get you started.
Spades – Jumping Jacks
Hearts – Burpees
Clubs – Situps
Diamonds – Jumprope
Let the kids draw the cards, it’s more fun and they feel like they’re in charge. If the child draws an 8 of spades, the they do 8 Jumping Jacks. If they draw a 2 of Hearts they do 2 Burpees and so forth. It’s fun and they get their heart pumping!
3. Do a Scavenger Hunt where your child finds Favorite Items they Own
Tell your child to go find (ideas below) and bring back to you to a desired location of your choosing, like the kitchen table, an ottoman, etc.
Favorite Stuffed Animal
Ask them whyy they chose that item. This engages the child with you in a conversation and helps you know their interests better. No pre-planning is needed and you can incorporate exercise into it by asking them to run, skip or hop on their way to get their favorite item each time.
This may not be something you do often, but every once in a while it would be fun as they’ll change what they’d bring to you. My daughters favorites are pictured above. What a great memory for me also to know what she holds near and dear to her heart.
4. Plan a Play-Date after school with some of your Child’s Friends
It’s hard to get to know all your child’s friends and their parents. This is a great way for you to get to know more about your child’s friends and their family! Go to an indoor play place to let the kids run and play or meet at a playground – Keep them moving!
