7 Hacks to Save Money on Gas
Are you tired of seeing all of your hard earned money going into your gas tank each week? It is no secret that gas is expensive, but what can you do about it? Here are 7 hacks to save big on gas and fill your tank up for less, much less. These little changes will really add up, so here is how you can get started.
1. Use your store loyalty card discounts.
Many stores such as Kroger will give you a gas discount when you shop in their stores. This discount can range from 10-30%. Patronize these grocery store gas stations so you can use your store loyalty card discount and fill up the tank for less.
2. Use gas apps.
There are so many gas apps out there that help you compare prices between gas station. Gas Buddy is a wonderful example, and can help you make an educated purchase prior to pumping! Use Gas App or another gas comparing app so you can be sure you always get the best deal.
3. Buy gas mid week.
Gas prices tend to go up before the weekend, especially if it is a holiday weekend. Try to fill up during the week when prices are lower, so you can avoid the weekend price hike. Even a few cents difference per gallon will add up.
4. Find some shade.
Whenever parking for an extended period of time, park in the shade. Heat can actually cause gas to evaporate, causing your hard earned money to float away. Instead, park in a cool spot where the car won’t take as much heat, resulting in the evaporation.
5. Pay at the pump.
Pay at the pump instead of going inside to pay for your gas. Yes the price will be the same, but you will avoid the impulse purchases that come with entering the gas station. Your $40 tank of gas could cost $50 by the time you add drink and snacks on. Pay at the pump instead.
NOTE: Some stores offer a Cash Discount, in that case you could save by paying Cash Inside, but remember that you can quickly offset that savings if you’re tempted to pick up drinks and snacks at the same time so take advantage of the savings and don’t add anything else to your transaction to save!
6. Get a gas station specific rewards card.
Gas stations such as Speedway offer rewards cards that give you discounts for your loyalty. You can not only earn money off your gas, but earn free coffee and snacks as well. Take the time to sign up for these cards, as they can save you more in the long run.
7. Consider the grade.
Consider the grade of gas you are using and see if you can use basic instead of premium. Many will argue that the grades are similar and most cars will perform just fine with basic grade gas. Weigh the benefits of each and see if you can make the switch to basic and save as much as .30 cents a gallon.
While these tips don’t seem like much when standing alone, add them up and you can enjoy some real savings on the gas you purchase. Give them a try!
#3 is COMPLETELY an old wives tale. I manage a very large name brand gas station/convenience store, this suggestion is completely fable. Prices are raised/lowered every day of the week, has zero to do with mid-week or not.
