Many people have an issue with keeping their stainless steel products clean, and they find that store bought cleaners just don’t seem to cut it. Here is an option for a DIY Stainless Steel Cleaner that has proven to be very effective.
One simple solution is to just fill a bottle with undiluted white vinegar. Another option is to use 2 cups of hot water mixed with 1/2 cup white vinegar and 2 tbsp of baking soda. Once you pour this mixture into a bottle it may foam up a bit. Be sure to let the foaming subside before putting the lid on the spray bottle.
Spray solution on your stainless steel surfaces and wipe clean following the grain of the stainless steel.
Vinegar allows you to clean with no harsh chemicals plus it is a great sanitizer. It cuts through the grease left behind by fingerprints and wipes clean instead of sometimes just smearing it around like store bought cleaners have been known to do.
You can buy a new spray bottle for your DIY Cleaners, I always like to re-purpose old cleaner bottles. Always be sure to label to make sure everyone in the house knows what is now in the bottle.
I love using vinegar to clean my stainless appliances! Side note: after wiping down with vinegar, use a little bit of OLIVE OIL on a micro fiber towel and it will buff any leftover finger prints right off! It leaves then beautifully shiny and helps keep fingerprints from sticking later, so maybe you won’t have to wipe it down as often! Good luck!
Just FYI: baking soda and vinegar react together to produce what basically amounts to salt – effectively canceling each other out. The only time baking soda and vinegar are effectively combined is when the “foam” is the desired result (like, for example, to clear a stopped drain).
Just a little tidbit for ya!
Pledge furniture Polish is the best thing for cleaning stainless. I have tried many homemade and commercial stainless cleaners that do not work.
Just spray pledge on, wipe off with a soft cloth. No scrubbing involved.
Smells good too.
I am going to try this. It seems I have spent a fortune on stainless products, and they all leave streaks!
the vinegar doesn’t work very well on stainless, still leaves streaks even if you really rub good
I find methylated spirits work great on stainless steel also, I used to use it on the big dishwasher at the pub I worked at, it buffs up really shiny and streak free :-) and you dont need stuff all arm muscles as it evaporates quickly so you dont need a lot of elbow grease to shine it up!
I use lemon oil polish on my stainless steel..a small amount on a clean soft cloth and it will your appliances shine. If you have a something stuck on your appliance, wash it off then apply the lemon oil. You will be pleased!
I have wiped down my silk, microwave, and counteract and the solution is leaving a white smear everywhere……what have i done wrong?
