How to make a Coupon Organizer that’s easy to maintain! This Coupon Box is an alternative to a Coupon Binder and is Easy to Make and Keep Organized!
Several of you have asked me How to Make a Coupon Organizer like the one I often show on Facebook Live, so I wanted to put together a detailed post on How to Make a Coupon Box and also explain why I think this is a Great Coupon Binder Alternative.
The Best Coupon Organizer
I have been using a Coupon Box as a Coupon Organizer for about 6 years now, I first received a Coupon Box from a company that asked me to do a review, she promised that I would never go back to a coupon binder again, and you know what… She was right! I fell in love with My Coupon Box and I’ve been using the same box ever since. There was only one problem. My Coupon Organizer was starting to fall apart, and the original company that it came from only sells these larger organizers now which I don’t like as much because they don’t fit as neatly in the front of a shopping cart.
How I Organize My Coupons Using a Coupon Box
- I organize my coupons Alphabetically by Brand Name. Basically Oreo Coupons go under “O” and Tide Coupons under “T”
- I place newer coupons at the front of each section, older coupons will naturally move towards the back, that’s helpful when you are cleaning out your expired coupons.
- I always use the Brand Name however you can use the item name, and you can also do Categories instead of ABC’s so it’s easy to customize to your preference.
- I keep my ECB’s and Register Rewards in a small box at the front of my coupon binder.
- I don’t clip every Coupon. This system probably won’t work well if you buy 15 papers a week and clip every coupon. I only clip coupons I know or think I will use! I keep all remaining inserts organized by the date they were in the paper so I can find additional coupons quickly.
Those are my basic tips for keeping this Coupon Organizer working well. Like I said I have been using this system for years and I really haven’t changed it much because it works well for me.

Why I ditched My Coupon Binder
One of the things I get asked all the time is why I ditched my Coupon Binder. I did use a coupon binder for the first 2-3 years I was couponing because honestly that was all I knew to do. Everything I read online and everyone I saw in stores had a big coupon binder so I just played follow the leader and while it did work well it was cumbersome to manage.
Probably the biggest reason I ditched my coupon binder is because it was too time consuming to manage. As the mom of little ones and Pregnant most of the time I was couponing during those early years I really didn’t have time to clip every coupon and file it in the binder, then the worst part, trying to clean out the coupons or find them in stores. I was stacking coupons behind coupons and it was getting complicated and too much for me. I needed simplicity and the Coupon Box Organization System worked perfectly!
How to Make a Coupon Box
I mentioned earlier that my original coupon box was falling apart, but I continued to use it anyway. Then a few weeks ago I saw this Photo Storage Box on Instagram, a blogger was talking about using it to organize her photos and I realized that it was EXACTLY what I needed to make a new coupon box, So I got online and found the exact same item on Amazon!
2 Things You Need to Make a Coupon Box
1.) Plastic Photo Keeper Box from Amazon
This one comes with 6 small plastic cases. I actually use one of these for my ECBs and Register Rewards now, but most of them I just pulled out of the box. The Photo Storage Box is the perfect size for coupons especially Internet Printable Coupons which I use a lot of now.
2.) 4″ x 6″ Plastic Tab Dividers that are Alphabetical
It’s important to make sure you get the 4×6 size because the larger 5×8 dividers won’t fit in the storage box! I loved the colors and also that they are Plastic and really durable.
Note: If you want to organize by categories you can just turn the tab dividers over and use a sharpie or label maker to label your dividers.
You really don’t have to do much to Assemble the Coupon Box, just pop your Tab Dividers in the box and start adding your coupons. I already had my coupons organized alphabetically in my old box so it took me less than 5 minutes to get everything transferred over. It probably took less than 10 minutes to make the entire coupon box :) It’s more about getting the right items and the system behind organizing the coupons, so Anyone can make one!

I use a box too but it is an index card box. I always clip every Q and save the Q’s from the Valpak/Money Mailer insert for a binder.
