15 Pokémon GO Tips for Moms
This new viral video game sensation, Pokémon GO is taking the world by storm. It is a very new and interesting way to play a video game, it has kids AND adults walking around everywhere in search of Pokémon. That is a little scary, though, having your kids running around town glued to their phone. There have been several horrific stories, which I am sure you’ve heard by now, of things that have happened to people while playing the game. Don’t let that ruin the fun for your kid, though. Here are 15 Pokémon GO tips for moms, to help you all better understand it and help keep your kids safe when playing the game.
Get to Know The Game
First and foremost, you should familiarize yourself with the Pokémon GO game. Learn how it works, how you play, and what it is all about this way you aren’t completely oblivious to what is going on and you’ll understand when your kid wants to go on a walk to catch Pokémon.
Location
Once you’ve gotten the game pretty much figured out, just a little thing you should know in case you are a person who is against things like this the game does use your exact location. There has been no breach in security so far so it is safe.
Be Aware of Your Data
This game requires the usage of data to get the full experience, so keep an eye on how much is being used depending on your data plan so you don’t accidentally go over and get charged.
In-App Purchasing
Be sure that your card is not linked to your app store account especially if your kid is playing on your device because there are in-app purchases and there are many instances where kids accidently purchase a LOT in apps. Be careful not to let this happen because you’ll be broke in minutes.
Camera
Again if you are a person who is against these things, this app allows the use of the phones camera for augmented reality. It can be turned off though so there is no need to worry too much.
Don’t Look at The Phone 24/7
When you and your kid are out hunting for Pokémon you can let them know that they can put the phone in their pocket with the game still on. It will notify them when a Pokémon has popped up. They don’t have to stare at the screen, distracted while walking which can be dangerous.
If They are Going Without You
If you decide to let them go hunt Pokémon without you, make sure they have a buddy or someone with them. There have been a few incidents of crime that have taken place and it is better for your kid to have someone with them while they are wondering around.
You Don’t Have to Be in The Exact Location as a Pokémon
Make sure your child knows that they do not have to be EXACTLY where the Pokémon is to catch it. Once it appears on the map on the phone all the need to do is click it and point the phone in the direction of the Pokémon. This will help avoid them running into the street.
Username
When you start the game you get to choose a username. It is best to choose one that isn’t identifying, meaning that it doesn’t contain any information about you like your name or birth year, etc.
Be Cautious
When going to gyms or Pokéstops (especially ones with lures) be careful and try to avoid them at all costs during the night because criminals have been using them to rob people. So just be as cautious as possible.
Don’t Play and Drive
Not that you are playing the game but if you are do not drive and play, it is just as bad if not worse than texting and driving. It might also be best not to let your kids play either because they will freak out when a Pokémon is near and it might scare you. So no playing in the car just for safety.
Phone Battery
Just a heads up if your phone is being used to play, this game will drain your battery very quickly so either buy a portable charging pack or don’t play on days you need your phone.
Dress Appropriately
Dress according to the weather and you are going to want to wear comfortable clothes and shoes because you never know how long you will be out. Also, if it is sunny out make sure sunblock is put on and maybe some bug spray.
Have Fun
Play the game with your kids! It can be a good bonding experience and a great way to spend time together and it really is a lot of fun. Just know it is very addicting once you start you cannot stop.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
The apps loading screen will tell you this but not many people pay attention to it. Make sure to stress to your kid that they need to look up and stay aware of where they are, to avoid walking into the road or going places they shouldn’t be, like people’s yards.
