For those of you who have ever tried them, you know that Magic Erasers are really magic. They clean just about everything off your walls, floors and other surfaces.
I really do love them. However, I do not love that they cost over $1 per sponge in most cases. That is a little too much for something that is really only good for one use before it dissolves.
So in looking for a cheaper alternative, I found out that Magic Erasers are made from a product called melamine foam. That’s it! And did you know that you can buy generic melamine foam? Amazon actually has a 100 piece Melamine Foam for just $9.99 Shipped! Compared to about $1 each for the regular Magic Erasers, this is quite a deal!
But as with Magic Erasers, melamine foam will disintegrate QUICKLY! They just don’t last very long. So if you prefer to use a regular sponge that does not have to be replaced with every use, you can try this DIY mixture that works quite well at getting rid of some of the same wall scuffs that a Magic Eraser does.
Homemade Magic Eraser Recipe
Mix together 1/2 teaspoon of Borax with 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a small bowl. Add about 1/2 cup of hot water. Dip your sponge and use this to get this tougher marks and stains off your walls and floors. If your walls are painted, you may want to test this application in an inconspicuous spot before using all over.
When you have tough marks that do not want to come off with normal cleaners and sponges, be sure to try either of these DIY Magic Eraser ideas to save a little money on what really works!
If you look in the right place you can find them $5.18/100
Those sponges are now $6.37 shipped for 100. That is a great deal. I use them for everything. My daughter used them on the rubber sole of her sneakers to keep them looking new. Thanks for the tip.
I buy a box of 2 pretty good size generic Magic Eraser sponges at Dollar General for a buck in their “dollar aisle”. I find that they work better than the Mr Clean brand because they are thicker and more sturdy (is that the right word?). The brand kind seem to tear apart a lot easier than these generic kind. They do last longer for me.
I do that too. Even my sponges I cut them in half last twice as last long.
I cut my magic erasers into smaller pieces to use. That way you are only wetting the size you need for a specific job and they last longer.
