Many people love to own their own steam cleaner for carpets but hate buying the carpet cleaner that is required for use. Use this recipe to make your own cleaner. You can clean them more often without the added cost of the cleaner.
You will need:
–Warm Water
–2 Gallon Pitcher
–Distilled White Vinegar
–Bleach-free liquid dish soap
–Essential Oils (optional)What to do:
- In 2-Gallon Pitcher, mix 1 gallon of warm water with 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar and 1/4 cup of bleach-free liquid dish soap. Optionally you can add a few drops of essential oils to give carpet fresh scent.
- Pour mixture into the cleaning solution reservoir of your carpet cleaning machine.
- Be sure to pre-treat any stains.
- Clean carpets as normal.
This option allows you to get a great clean for your carpets for a fraction of the cost you would pay for carpet cleaner. It can allow you to clean more often for less!
How much solution do you use in the reservoir if it does not provide a measure cup?
works great thanks
I’m very interested in making my own carpet cleaning solution for my steam cleaner. The photo that accompanies the recipe shows Arm & Hammer Washing Soda yet none of this ingredient is listed in the recipe for the cleaner. I’m anxious to make this! Help, please!
You show a box of baking soda but your recipe doesn’t include it; are we to assume that you used it and that we should? And if so, how much?
Thank you
You don’t really need it. We have updated the recipe since we did the picture because the one in the post works better than the first one we posted.
Why does the picture show washing soda but then the recipe doesn’t call for it?

Wow, just cleaned my bedroom carpet . Loved it, I did add 1/2 cup of vinegar, instead of 1/4 cup. Will never buy carpet cleaning solution again! Thank you so much.
WOW!! I am so glad to have found this! I kept putting off buying the shampoo for my carpet cleaner because the small bottles were always gone and the big bottle was more than I wanted to pay. THANK YOU!!!!
This works on smoky smells that are embedded in the carpet from fireplaces (etc.). Also, using lemon scented dishwasher detergent leaves an subtle, but clean smell. Works great on stains! Try this and I promise you won’t be buying the pricy department store brands.
wow my husband cleans carpet for a living and advises not to do this! It may look clean to start with but it comes up alot when someone like him comes to clean your carpet also it makes your carpet collect dirt faster…
We use laundry soap instead of dish soap
would using laundry soap make it foamy and hard to suction? Also, how would you rinse the residue?
This worked great I added about 1/3 cup of Downey fabric softener to this mix and the carpets smell great and have a touch of softness and it doesn’t mess up your machine.
I would worry about sudsing. My machine has lots of brushes and goods up when something sudsy goes in. Wonder how it would work with high efficiency laundry soap? They’re made to be low-suds… Anyone try it this way?
I always get confused when I see these types of recipes. Do you use the concentrated or non-concentrated dish soap? I can’t wait to try this recipe!
I do this!! Works great!! I use Dawn original dishwashing liquid.
