1.) Have Flexible Dates
If you are planning a vacation and you don’t have specific dates that you need to travel check the rate calendar first. For example when we booked our recent vacation to the beach I looked at the different rates for each week of the year, then I picked a week that fit in our schedule and had a lower rate. By going 2 weeks earlier than we had planned we were able to save around 30%!
2.) Travel during the School Year
If you’re traveling with kids and you can pull them out of school for a few days then you can often get better deals during the school year + as an added bonus the crowds are typically calmer during times when kids are in school especially if you’re visiting a Family Friendly location.
3.) Fly in the Middle of the Week
Did you know that some days of the week are cheaper to fly than others. According to Airfare Watchdog you can get the best rates when you travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. These are in the middle of the week and tend to have the fewest seats sold so Airlines drop the prices to fill up the flights.
4.) Pack Your Own Carry on Snacks
Most people don’t think to bring food with them on a flight, but you can actually bring most foods through Security it’s only Drinks that are forbidden. That means that you can pack snacks and save money by avoiding that over-priced airport food. I have done this countless times and I save so much money by packing my own snacks.
5.) Buy a Luggage Scale
Want to save yourself some time and headaches + those over-weight baggage fees? Buy a Small Luggage Scale, I have had one of these for almost 5 years now and I can’t tell you how many times it has saved me because I tend to pack close to those Baggage Limits. If you go over the fees are almost double so it’s a good idea to know exactly how much your packing before you arrive at the airport when you still have time to make adjustments or balance out your bags.
Amazon has a great selection of Luggage Scales for under $10.
6.) Sign Up for Discount Sites
We have gotten some great discounts on Hotels, All Inclusive Resorts and more from Rue La La, this is one of my favorites. Gilt also has a travel site called JetSetter which is also a favorite for finding discount trips on highly rated hotels.
You can also sign up for one of my favorite discount sites Here they send out deals and discounts on hotels, packages and more.
7.) Use the Hopper App to Track Prices
You can use the Hopper Price App to track prices of your flights. It will tell you what the lowest price has been and if the price is expected to drop. Download the Hopper app here.
8.) Opt for a Nice Lunch over Dinner
If you are dying to try a popular restaurant at your destination then opt for Lunch! Eating a Fancier lunch out and a more modest Dinner will save you money because the Lunch Menu can be as much as 25% less than the dinner prices at most restaurants. We do this every year when we go to the beach, we often take a day to go shopping and enjoy a fancy lunch rather than going to the same restaurant for dinner. I’ve also had good luck with this strategy in New York while eating at some of the most popular restaurants.
9.) Use Uber instead of Cabs
In most larger US Cities you can use Uber to get around town instead of a Cab. This is often more efficient since Uber doesn’t charge you per minute, it charges based on distance. You can sign up for Uber Here and use the Invite Code KUB37 to get your First Uber Ride Free. Just apply the Promo Code in your Account before you leave for your trip.
10.) Look for Free Food Tours
Use the site Free Tours By Foot to look up Free Tours in major European and American Cities, This can be a way to see the city for less! Most require you to pay your own entrances or buy your own food but one of the things I love doing in big cities is taking a walking food tour because you get to see the city and taste some of the best foods they offer!
11.) Watch Local Deal Sites for Discounts
Sites like Groupon and Living Social offer awesome deals in all destinations, these vouchers are a great way to get popular attractions, shows and services for as much as half off! I start checking Groupon 2-3 months before we leave on vacation to watch for any deals I might want to take advantage of. Most of these are for New Members or New Customers so they are perfect if you haven’t ever been to this area before.
12.) Choose Restaurants based on Price Range
This app lets you search for Restaurants nearby your location but also lets you filter based on price so you can make an informed decision before you arrive at the restaurant, in most cases you can also see the menu or book a reservation. You can download the Urban Spoon App Here.
