They do take a little while since they are from scratch, so plan some time to tackle this during the day and maybe have the Pretzels ready to bake one afternoon when the kids get home from school.
Here’s what you need:
4 Tbsp Butter Melted
1 Tbsp Sugar
2 tsp Kosher Salt
1 1/2 Cups Warm Water
1 Tbsp Instant Dry Yeast
4 1/2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
2/3 Cup Baking Soda
1 Egg Yolk Beaten
Combine the Butter, Sugar, Salt, and Warm Water in a bowl. Add in the yeast on top of the warm water mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes to proof the yeast.
Slowly add in the Flour using a blender to mix gently in between. Once you get all the flour added mix on Medium for 5 minutes to knead the dough completely. Once the dough starts pulling away from the sides of the bowl it should be ready.
Place Dough in a Bowl greased with a little bit of Olive Oil and cover tightly and let rise until doubled in size. (Approx an hour)
Place Dough on a Cutting Board or Counter Top. Cut into 18 pieces (I cut mine in half, then each piece in thirds, then each piece in thirds again) for big pretzels.
Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into a heart shape. You can also make them a normal pretzel shape at this point or get creative!
Fill a Large Stock Pot with Water and bring to a boil. Add in the 2/3 Cup Baking Soda – This will fizz up some so make sure you have plenty of room in your pot.
Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds. Place on a Parchment Lined Baking Sheet and brush with Egg Yolk.
Bake Pretzels for 14 minutes at 450 degrees or until Brown.
