I know it’s a little early, but I actually started my kids Back to School Clothing Shopping this week! You can get some great Deals on Back to School Clothes for Kids right now and I thought I would share a few of the ways you can save money when buying Back to School Clothes!
1. Take Inventory.
The first thing I had my kids do before we went shopping was try on EVERYTHING in their closet that they can wear to school, my kids wear uniforms at school so I pulled out everything that was “approved” and had them try it on so I knew what fit, what size they needed and what was too small.
2. Make a list.
Can I just tell you these sales get me :) All the awesome deals just make me want to buy because it’s on sale and having a list helps me say no. If you start by taking an inventory and you make a list of the items you still need you’ll be more prepared to only buy what you need.
3. Don’t Spend More to Save.
A lot of stores have these Spend $50 get $25 in Store Cash Certificates for a FUTURE Purchase. Unless you know you’ll spend the future cash (Kohl’s Cash, Gymbucks, etc) don’t spend more to earn those certificates. Stores know you will increase the value of your purchase in order to earn a certificate that has a very very low redemption rate. Most people don’t use those certificates because they are only valid for a few days at a time. I avoid these types of sales unless I’m earning the cash on purchases I was already planning to make. Just make sure you’re not spending more to save more!
4. Use Coupons.
Did you know that TONS of Retailers offer In Store Coupons! Stores like Children’s Place, Gymboree, Old Navy and Kohl’s often have in store coupons you can use to stack with sales! Download the RetailMeNot App and you’ll be able to search for coupons from inside the store. This is my FAVORITE way to get coupons for retailers because I don’t have to remember to print anything before I go shopping, I can just look up stores as I shop and find things I need to buy and most of the time I can find an additional coupon savings that lowers my total.
5. Shop without your kids.
This can be tricky because it’s a lot of fun to take your kids Back to School Shopping, but I find that shopping online or without my kids actually helps me stick to my list. My kids are the type that want something because they can see it, when If I am shopping alone I’m more likely to wait and find a better price online or wait until the item goes on sale.
6. Don’t buy everything you need.
If you live in a warm climate and you don’t need a heavy coat until December then don’t feel like you need to buy everything all at once. If there are items on your list that can wait, then you have a better chance of finding a sale before you need that item so don’t rush to buy everything all at once in order to mark it off your list.
7. Shop over multiple weeks.
I like to make a list of clothing items, shoes, jackets, backpacks, etc. everything that I know I will need for my kids and start shopping early. That gives me time to watch the sales and find the lowest prices on items on my list. If I find a great deal I can go ahead and buy the item and keep my receipt in case the price drops or I find a better deal at another store.
8. Have a clothing swap with Friends.
If you go to a private school consider getting 5-7 moms together for a clothing swap. If you all have kids different ages you could either price the items like a consignment sale or just swap 1 for 1. This is great if you have strict uniform guidelines because uniform clothing can often be expensive.
Those are just a few of the ways we are saving money this year. I would love to know what strategies and tips you have for saving money on back to school shopping!
