They say your mattress should be replaced every eight years. But what can you do during those eight year to keep it fresh and free of dust mites or other critters that can hide in your mattress. Here is a fairly simple way to Clean and Freshen Your Mattress.
All you really need to clean and freshen your mattress is baking soda and a vacuum. Doing this even once a month will help control dust mites and leave your mattress smelling a little fresher than before you did it.
Remove all your bedding and sprinkle the baking soda onto your mattress and let it sit. Use a sieve or a sifter to sprinkle it as evenly as possible. After about an hour just vacuum it off with your upholstery attachment. The baking soda tends to pull the odor out of the mattress and the vacuum will hopefully grab the dust mites that have settled in. Yuck. I really hate thinking about everything that lives in your mattress. Makes me want to go back to the good ‘ol days of the waterbed.
If you want your mattress to smell different than just the smell baking soda will leave behind, you can add some essential oils to the baking soda and shake well before sprinkling on the mattress.
Another trick to keep is smelling good between cleanings is to stick a couple dryer sheets between the box spring and the mattress. I will absorb some of the odors until your next cleaning.
Just a simple act of baking soda and a good vacuuming will leave your mattress smelling so fresh you will want to do it every week. Well not really, but maybe at least once a month! :)
Never knew there were so many uses for baking soda and vinegar, as well.. very informative
