It seems we always have old markers laying around, and I wanted to show you how to make recycled marker spray paint with all of them!! This is great for both younger and older kiddos! And, it also gives the younger ones practice sorting colors, which is a great activity all by itself. I have a few tips and tricks, so scroll down to see the details!
Recycled Marker Spray Paint
You only need three things for this activity. There are so many projects out there for recycled crayons, so I’m glad to share one for recycled markers, too!
Supplies for Recycled Marker Spray Paint
- Old Markers – Of course!
- Spray Bottle – I used multiple spray bottles, but if you only have one, you could switch out the colors and do one layer at a time.
- Water
- Paper or Canvas – Just something to create your art on! Since this is highly washable, I’m sure you could also spray it on driveway, BUT I have not tried it and do not recommend it without trying a small patch, first!
Instructions for Upcycled Marker Watercolor Paint
This really does look like watercolors! It’s so pretty! First, you need to separate the markers you have into common color groupings. Like, I grouped mine into pinks/reds, blues, yellow/oranges, greens, and purples. The markers in each group don’t have to be exactly the same color, but should be from the same color family, or else the paint will get muddy looking and not as vibrant.
Next add water and let the water soak up the pigment from the markers. I let them sit an hour in the sunshine. I felt like the heat might have sped it up a bit? You probably don’t need to do that, though.
Lastly, just enjoy spraying! Doing this activity outside is best. And, you might even want to spray one color and let it dry before spraying another color so the colors don’t get too mixed together. But, there’s truly no right or wrong way to do it. Just have fun!
