I hate the feeling of getting halfway through a recipe and realizing I’m out of one of the important ingredients. The thought of rushing out to the store to get the one item is dreadful!
Below is a list of some of the most commonly subtituted items when baking. Keep this list handy!
Ingredient | Amount | Substitution |
Allspice | 1 teaspoon | 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ginger, 1/4 tsp cloves |
Baking Powder | 1 teaspoon | 1/4 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp cream of tartar, 1/4 tsp cornstarch |
Baking Soda | 1/2 teaspoon | 2 tsp double-acting baking powder |
Brown Sugar | 1 cup, packed | 1 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup molasses (decrease liquid in recipe by 1/4 cup) |
Buttermilk | 1 cup | 1 tsp lemon juice + enough milk to make 1 cup |
Cake Flour | 1 cup | 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 2 Tbls cornstarch |
Corn Syrup | 1 cup | 1/4 cup white sugar, 1/3 cup water |
Cream of Tarter | 1 teaspoon | 2 tsp lemon juice or vinegar |
Egg | 1 Egg | 1/4 cup applesauce or 1/2 banana |
Whether you bake every week, or whenever the mood strikes, you now don’t have to throw in the “kitchen” towel just because you are missing one of the main ingredients. Check the Baking Substitutions list and see what you can replace it with!
