These Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs can be made in less than 10 minutes! I love that they’re a healthy option for all of my patriotic parties and the red and blue drizzle add just the right amount of sweetness on the cake without being too overwhelming.
How to Make Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs
This patriotic dessert can be made so quickly with simple ingredients, yet the red, white and blue colors make it festive for all your summer holidays like Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day! These Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs would even be perfect in November for Veterans Day!
Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs Ingredients
Strawberries – Be sure to wash the strawberries first. Then hull the strawberries and cut them in half! An easy way to hull strawberries is to push a plastic straw through the center of them to take off the stem and leaves!
Blueberries – Be sure to wash them first! I like to stick 2-4 blueberries on these skewers at a time, since they’re so much smaller than the other food items on the skewer.
Angel Food Cake – You can make this from scratch or purchase it ready made! I bought a rectangle angel food cake loaf from my local supercenter and it was so easy to cut up for this dessert. A butter pound cake would also work well to use in place of the angel food cake. I would not use a regular vanilla cake though, because it would crumble instead of staying in the cube shape on the skewer.
Candy Melts – These are to drizzle over the cake for the sweet shortcake taste! In addition to the red candy melts, you could use dark blue, light blue, or turquoise candy melts for your Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs and I think any colors would be cute!
Skewers – Even though this is not an ingredient, you definitely need wooden skewers to make this recipe! If you can’t find short ones, you could use the long grilling skewers at all grocery stores and just cut them to the size you need.
Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs Step by Step Instructions (With Photos)
At the bottom of this post, there is a recipe card you can print out or screenshot, but for those who like the step-by-step instructions with photos, I added those here that you can follow along with!
First, I had to cut the skewers to a shorter size because I used the grilling skewers. Next, I placed the fruit and cake in this order for the Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs: Strawberries (red), cake (white) and blueberries (blue). I really wanted the ingredients in a red, white, and blue order.
Next, I melted the candy melts and drizzled them on. I have found the easiest way ever to do this! I really like to use disposable pastry bags and melt them at 30 second intervals in the microwave, kneading the bag in between each time. I love the pastry bags because they’re a no-mess option that you don’t have to clean up afterwards!
How to store Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs
You can store Patriotic Shortcake Kebabs in the fridge for one day and they will still be fresh, but be sure to have them covered tightly so the strawberries don’t dry out! I wouldn’t store them any longer, as the cake will get soggy near the fruit juice. They’re best served right after you make them.
